    Define self-righteousness

I need a good definition for the meaning of "self-righteousness", doesn't need to be very concise, thanks.
Tit 3:2 to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people.

    Re: Define self-righteousness

Being “self-righteous” is attempting to gain merit through accomplishments, giving, works, prayer, repentance, church-going, being a good father or mother or any other way that we can conceive to make us feel justified before a Holy God without resting in the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ. Attempting to be declared righteous by the Law.
    Psalm 19:14
May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
    be pleasing in your sight,
O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Self righteousness is anything other than Gods righteousness.

I have to disagree with the definitions so far. Self righteousness is claiming ones own righteousness.

•Self-righteousness (also called sententiousness, holier-than-thou) is a feeling of smug moral superiority derived from a sense that one's beliefs, actions, or affiliations are of greater virtue than those of the average person
    •piously self-assured and smugly moralistic

    self-right·eous (slfrchs)
    adj.
    1. Piously sure of one's own righteousness; moralistic.
    2. Exhibiting pious self-assurance:

    self-righteous
    adj
having or showing an exaggerated awareness of one's own virtuousness or rights

    self·-righteous (-rī′c̸həs)

    adjective

filled with or showing a conviction of being morally superior, or more righteous than others; smugly virtuous

    Definition of SELF-RIGHTEOUS
: convinced of one's own righteousness especially in contrast with the actions and beliefs of others : narrow-mindedly moralistic
    self-righteous

    ▶adjective
certain that one is totally correct or morally superior.

I've posted definitions from several sources to show that not one of them uses the word merit at all. Christians so often use this word to say that it is trying to earn salvation from God. That is not the meaning of the word. The word means to declare yourself morally superior to others.

The belief the salvation is by our own works, and an attitude of feeling superior to other believers.

Paul gives insight in Rom 10:1-4 esp 3 For they being ignorant of Gods righteousness and going about to establish their own righteousness.

Basically Me half the time. The half I'm reminded what a worm I am.

we can all be self righteous, even if we know in our heart that our own rightoeusness can't do anything for us. Self rightoesness is walking under your power, weather your a Christian or not.
    E ku'u lesu, ku'u Ho'ola

My Jesus, My savior. You are the way, the truth and the everlasting life. Amen

One who jumps the gun and declares himself righteous BEFORE God has His say. Anyone who sees himself as righteous for whatever reason.

    Define self-righteousness:

"Thank you God that I am not a sinner like the rest of you pagans."

That is the right answer. Two words: the righteousness....of self

The self righteous are those that actually think their own resume smells good. They are the ones that evaluate the Christian walk based on how well we keep the law. They are those that love to judge others and praise themselves. They actually think they can see (John 9:41). They do not get the point of Luke 18:9-14.

    Shalom
