Define self-righteousness

Being “self-righteous” is attempting to gain merit through accomplishments, giving, works, prayer, repentance, church-going, being a good father or mother or any other way that we can conceive to make us feel justified before a Holy God without resting in the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ. I have to disagree with the definitions so far. Self righteousness is claiming ones own righteousness.

I've posted definitions from several sources to show that not one of them uses the word merit at all. Christians so often use this word to say that it is trying to earn salvation from God. That is not the meaning of the word. The word means to declare yourself morally superior to others.

we can all be self righteous, even if we know in our heart that our own rightoeusness can't do anything for us. Self rightoesness is walking under your power, weather your a Christian or not.

That is the right answer. Two words: the righteousness....of self

The self righteous are those that actually think their own resume smells good. They are the ones that evaluate the Christian walk based on how well we keep the law. They are those that love to judge others and praise themselves. They actually think they can see (John 9:41). They do not get the point of Luke 18:9-14.
